The Texas Children's Hospital - A Thanksgiving Day Blessing
By Gina D.
Back in January, 2004 my nine year old grandson Brian had a horrible cold with flu like symptoms he couldn't seem to shake. I told my daughter she needed to take him back to the doctor or emergency room because it sounded like it had settled in his chest. After running several tests on him, the Doctor in the emergency room diagnosed Brian with pneumonia. He also saw something in Brian’s chest x-rays that concerned him, so he immediately transferred Brian to The Texas Children's Hospital. Texas Children's Hospital is an internationally recognized full-care pediatric hospital located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston. It is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States, Texas Children's Hospital is dedicated to providing the finest possible pediatric patient care, education and research. It broke my heart to see so many of our precious children having to go through cancer treatments. Even though they had lost their hair, and looked so frail due to the chemotherapy treatments, they still managed to keep a beautiful smile on their faces. They ran extensive tests on Brian, in addition to treating him for pneumonia. He remained in the hospital for several weeks while being poked and prodded, while they ran test after test. A few weeks later Brian was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We were all in a state of shock. How could this happen to such a young child we asked? Brian was never a sickly child. According to medical journals, Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a cancer that starts in cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body's immune system. Lymphocytes are in the lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissues (such as the spleen and bone marrow). We were surprised to read that it was actually very common in young children my grandson’s age. Needless to say, my daughter and son in law were both falling apart emotionally. Even though I was an emotional wreck myself, I had to be strong for my daughter, son in law, and especially my grandson Brian. He didn’t understand what was happening to him. It broke my heart to see my young grandson lying in a hospital bed looking so helpless and frail, while undergoing his cancer treatments. He couldn't hold any food down, and had lost so much weight. We prayed and never lost our faith in God. It was a long journey, but Brian’s cancer treatments seemed to be working. He continued going to the Doctor for regular check up’s. His last Doctor visit was the Monday before Thanksgiving Day of 2010. On Thanksgiving Day, our family had just finished thanking God for the food we were about to eat when Brian asked me if he could say something. I looked at him and nodded yes, wondering what he had to say. He had a big smile on his face when he said, Nana, the Doctor said I was cancer free. I don’t have cancer anymore. Of course tears of joy started to flow through the house. That was the best news ever. It was a Happy Thanksgiving Day for all. ”God Is Good”

Heart warming story. I have lost close relatives to cancer, including my mother and mother-in-law. I understand the emotions we experience as we hope for the recovery of our loved ones. But faith in our good Lord carries us through.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story, Gina. Back in the 1970's, my next door neighbors lost their only daughter at age 10. I still think about this little girl and the family loss,40 years later, and wonder why. I'm very glad for your blessings and I hope that you have many years to enjoy them. Best to you. Frederick

Thank you for your kind words Frederick. It is never easy when we a child'd life is lost. Every day is not guaranteed to us, so we should live every day as if it is our last. The good Lord has blessed me with good health. I plan on enjoying every day of it. Kind regards, Gina
Thanks for sharing your story Gina. Cancer is a terrible disease, but it seems much worse when it happens to children. I'm glad to hear that your grandson has been given the all clear. Keith

Thank you Keith. It is an emotional challenge for everyone that has dealt with cancer. But when it is a child, it just breaks my heart. Our family is truly blessed to have received the great news for a clean bill of health for my grandson. I will never forget that wonderful Thanksgiving Day. Gina
Gina, you are truly blessed. My family has been touched by cancer much too often. Nearly a year ago my niece's daughter was diagnosed with bone cancer but they caught it early and so far it looks like it's all gone. My thoughts are with you. Rosemary

Being in Houston, I agree, TCH is one of the best! Thanks for the great intel.
As I read of your grandson's health problems and the end result I had tears in my eyes. So many of my friends and family have died of cancer. It is no respector of age. It would be wonderful if a cure could be found. I know that there are so many various kinds of cancer that it is difficult to do that. We need a Miracle. I am so happy that Brian has survived this ordeal.
