What Is A Torn Rotator Cuff?
By Gina D.
In September, I began experiencing some severe shoulder pain. The pain feels like someone is stabbing you thru out your shoulder. It can even wake you up out of a sound sleep. Something as simple as getting dressed, lifting your arms, and brushing your hair can cause severe pain. I had some xrays taken of my shoulder, but unfortunately they didnt see anything out of the ordinary, other than a bit of swelling. They prescribed me an anti inflammatory medication for the swelling as well as something for the pain. When that didnt work, they referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. He gave me a cortisone shot in my shoulder, which was quite painful. After two weeks, I still didn't have any relief from the pain. So, now I'm scheduled for an MRI because the doctor said I may have a torn rotator cuff. The MRI will confirm his prognosis. What is a rotator cuff? The rotator cuff is made of four muscles. Their tendons form a "cuff" of tissue over the upper end of the arm bone. The rounded "ball" at the top of the ball and socket joint. This is what makes you able to move your arm up, down and around in a circular motion. One of these muscles rests on top of your shoulder. Its tendon runs under the shoulder blade, on the outside of the shoulder. You can develop tendinitis or bursitis. You can also experience a partial tear or a complete tear. What causes a torn rotator cuff? The tissue of the tendons begin to weaken, causing them to tear. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities that require alot of overhead shoulder movement can cause a torn rotator cuff. There are several other ways you can tear your rotator cuff. Your doctor can treat this condition several different ways. He can issue anti inflammatory medication, physical therapy or even surgery. If he recommends surgery, your doctor can advise you if the surgery can be done arthroscopically. This type of surgery allows your orthopedic surgeon to examine and repair any damage to your shoulder, as a result patients have a faster recovery time and hopefully, no more pain. Once Ive had the MRI, Im sure the doctor will make his recommendations. So wish me luck...........
